Four Wise Deer

Four Wise Deer
Four Wise Deer

Four Wise Deer (with apologies to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow).

The four came walking from far away.

Four Wise Deer out of the west were they

They traveled by twilight and slept by day

For their guide was a beautiful wonderful star.

And so these 4 four deer walked to the east,

through the dusk of night and yucca to tell.

Many thought the deer to be insane

Walking so far across the plain.

They saw the light in the stable

And they knew they were near

To a place where Christ was born that year

They saw the Three Wise Men and a child on the straw

They came up for a drink but left in awe.

Frank Bliss 2019

This is the last post for Christmas Day of 2019. I’m sure the deer in this image were born a bit more recently than 2019 years ago at the birth of Christ. If truth be known, they were in fact walking away from that “Drink” at one of our stock tanks. I often see this small group right at sunset walking away from a water tank we keep open all winter. It’s been so snowy that I haven’t gotten into the backcountry for weeks now.

I’m thinking at this point that I’m not going to get my new ride by Christmas. Ford apparently can’t deliver trucks on the schedule they told me they could.😟 I won’t belay the point but they could have done this better.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.. !

Cigar Store Indian Christmas

Cigar Store Indian Christmas

We obtained this Carving in 1993 while living in Jackson Hole. It has been on our porch under roof since then. While he does stay outside. He seems to be celebrating the holiday with the rest of us.

Cigar Store Indians are one of many different kind of carvings of various symbols in front of shops so passersby knew what was sold inside. A carving of a wooden Indian indicated a tobacco store; a red and white striped pole, a barber/dentist, a mortar and pestle indicated an apothecary while three gold balls meant a pawn shop. This tradition was because most of the customers could not read. Thus the symbolism was used instead.

The use of the carved Indians as a symbol in front of a tobacco shop began in England. Way back in the early 1600s as the ships from America began to bring tobacco to Europe. The symbolism of Native Americans became attached to the statues. This is because they were the source of the tobacco supply at that time. By the mid 1600’s, tobacco was growing in popularity. Cigar store Indians gave rise to what became a form of signage that has been used for the 350 years since. Many of the early carvings were made by craftsmen who had never seen a Native American. Those statues were based on drawings or descriptions from those who had visited the new world. The sculptures were sometimes called “Virginians” or “Virginnie men” to clarify what they represented.

Frosted Christmas Wreaths

Frosted Christmas Wreaths

We get some tremendous frosts here in “Little Siberia”. That is the nickname the previous family that lived here passed on to us. When it’s raining in the valleys, we usually have the snow line right around the edge of our ground. Of course mid winter everybody had snow and this year is no exception. There are advantages to living up on a high ridge (views). But living above the snow line is always interesting when weather moves through.

I’m mostly locked out of the backcountry due to snow already in late December. Deeper drifts keep me closer to the house and on the roads. I do occasionally plow a path up on the ridge tops which usually don’t have deep snow. The wind pushes it off the east and southern slopes leaving a path of thinner snow pack at the ridge top. You only have to watch out for Yucca plants which will trap their own drifts which can be huge. I’ve never been stuck back here that I had to dig myself out YET. I’ve been lucky

This has been an exceptional year for moisture in all forms. Normally we only get 14 inches but I’ve counted 20 inches myself this year There is about an inch of water sitting on the ground in the form of snow. We still have a probable last week of December to go. We need a few dozen snows like this to keep up the moisture for next year.

Christmas Crown Sky Cathedral

Christmas Crown Sky Cathedral

6 months ago during the summer solstice of 2019, a BIG 100 mile across mesocyclone moved over us right at sunset. Of course “Sneaky Pete” the Windmill jumped into the photo as he is a terrible attention hog. I have no control over his actions. Windmill Wednesday AND Christmas Wednesday. , Windmill Junkies Unite 🤘

Satire:

I do understand through a third party that “Sneaky Pete” the Windmill wishes all of his fans a very very Merry Christmas. He has this insecurity problem where he wants to solve through fame and fortune acquired via his exposure in pictures. So he rushes into my images. His brother “Re-Pete” I’m sure also has Christmas wishes but he couldn’t be present at this photo taking session. He was over the hill out at his hangout during this storm.. Hard to get a family together portrait of the two brothers. They can’t move easily through the timber. I suspect they haven’t seen each other for a long time. I’ll have to see if I can arrange a digital family reunion someday…. 😜

I’m not sure what his New Year resolution. I’m pretty sure it has to involve photobombing more and injecting himself into my landscapes.

My new years resolution is to catch more skies like this and finally get all these images I’ve got stored away up on my web gallery. That will take a “while”. I consider it job security.

From all of us at the Bliss DInosaur Ranch, all of it’s creatures mythical and otherwise , Merry Christmas and a Happy/Safe New Year. 2020 is going to be an interesting year to be alive.

Halloween is About Over: Christmas is Next

Halloween is About Over: Christmas is Next
Halloween is About Over: Christmas is Next

Here we are with Halloween night about over…The witches are heading home…….Christmas is next.

Is that a christmas tree??? Maybe an angel?? Actually that’s lens flare which is an artifact phenomena inside the lens from really bright light bouncing about.
Another artist has convinced me that they are being used in movies now as “cool” work and there are even filters to add them to your images.

This is a natural lens flare (as it were) that I could work at positioning on the screen overlaying the background of the “Red Hills” in the distance (40 miles).

I’m trying to work these things lolo. I’m not sure what the big thing is but hey, here is a big one. Like it???😲
